Many websites do this, because cookies enable website publishers to do useful things like find out whether the computer (and probably its user) has visited the website before. This is done on a repeat visit by checking to see, and finding, the cookie left there on the last visit.

Information supplied by cookies can help us to provide you with a better online user experience and assist us to analyse the profile of our visitors. For example: if on a previous visit you went to our education pages, we might find this out from your cookie and highlight educational information on your second and subsequent visits.

3. What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small amount of data, which often includes an anonymous unique identifier that is sent to your browser from a website's computer and stored on your computer's hard drive. Each website can send its own cookie to your browser if your browser's preferences allow it, but (to protect your privacy) your browser only permits a web site to access the cookies it has already sent to you, not the cookies sent to you by other sites.

Many sites do this whenever a user visits their website in order to track online traffic flows.

Cookies record information about your online preferences. Users have the opportunity to set their computers to accept all cookies, to notify them when a cookie is issued, or not to receive cookies at any time. The last of these, of course, means that certain personalised services cannot then be provided to that user user and accordingly you may not be able to take full advantage of all of the SeeItFirst.co.uk features. Each browser is different, so check the "Help" menu of your browser to learn how to change your cookie preferences.

If you have set your computer to reject cookies you can still browse SeeItFirst.co.uk anonymously until such time as you wish to register for SeeItFirst.co.uk services. For further information on cookies please visit www.aboutcookies.org.

Where personal information is held for people who are not yet registered but have taken part in other SeeItFirst.co.uk services (e.g. competitions), that information will be held as long as is necessary to ensure that the service is run smoothly. We will ensure that all personal information supplied is held securely, in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

G. Children's Privacy Policy

In accordance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, SeeItFirst.co.uk has adopted special procedures applicable to personal information from users under the age of 13. It is SeeItFirst.co.uk policy not to solicit any personally identifiable information from these users for our own use without notice to a parent or guardian. Additionally, if SeeItFirst.co.uk determines that a user is under the age of 13, based on the information provided during the registration process, that user either will not be permitted to register or will not be permitted to register without notice to a parent or guardian. The following procedures supersede any conflicting portions of the SeeItFirst.co.uk's general privacy policy with respect to users under the age of 13.

When a user under the age of 13 attempts to register on applicable portions of SeeItFirst.co.uk, the user may either be prohibited from registering for the activity or will be asked to submit his or her first name, e-mail address, and parent's e-mail address. No more information than is reasonably necessary as a precondition for participation in an activity will be requested.

The following applies to activities on SeeItFirst.co.uk where the website operator will need to retain a child's e-mail address for ongoing communication (i.e. Newsletter): When a user under the age of 13 attempts to submit his or her registration information, SeeItFirst.co.uk's system will either prohibit the child from registering or automatically forward notification to the parents, who are given the option to unsubscribe their child from the activity. By following the instructions provided in the notice, the parent or guardian will be given the option to decline the user's registration, or opt-out. In addition, we will send a separate e-mail notification to the user's e-mail address to inform him/her that notice of their activity was e-mailed to their parent's e-mail address, and that the registration will not become valid if the parent or guardian unsubscribes the user from the activity. SeeItFirst.co.uk will not retain any personal information from a user under the age of 13 if a parent unsubscribes their child. If unsubscribed, all information provided to the website by the child will be deleted.

As described in SeeItFirst.co.uk's general privacy policy above, SeeItFirst.co.uk may use cookies to gather information that will be associated with personal information of a user under the age of 13. Cookies allow SeeItFirst.co.uk to better customize visits to the site to match the child's preferences. Under the Children's Privacy Policy, SeeItFirst.co.uk extends the previously listed privacy procedures to protect the confidentiality, security and integrity of personal information collected from children.

SeeItFirst.co.uk suggests that you please discuss this statement with your children.
